Before you book

How many people can come?

Four — three across the back and one in the front. Three in the back is fine for a shorter day and honestly tight on a long one, so for a nine or ten hour day three of you in total is the comfortable number. Tell us how many you are and we will say plainly whether the day you want suits it. It is one car and one party a day either way, so you are never sharing with anybody else.

Where do you pick up from?

From the door of wherever you are staying, anywhere within about an hour of us. We are based at Dundreggan, up Glenmoriston, which puts Fort Augustus 15 min, Drumnadrochit 30 min, Inverness 50 min, Fort William 1 h away. The hour is a guide rather than a boundary — Aviemore is beyond it because the road east goes around the Monadhliath rather than over, and we will tell you what that does to the day.

The pick-up radius

How long is a day?

Between eight and twelve hours. The tours on this site sit at the shorter end of that — eight to ten — and a day built around somewhere further out can run longer. The itineraries give durations rather than clock times on purpose: a day that promises nine o’clock at Urquhart is making a promise the weather can break.

Is the price per person?

No. It is priced for the car, the driver and where you are going, from £1,050 — so it does not change whether one of you comes or four. A longer day, or one that goes further, costs a little more. Every day is quoted individually rather than read off a list.

How do I book?

You tell us the week you are here and roughly what you want from it. There is no booking engine and nothing to pay to ask. Dan replies within a working day with a written itinerary and a price, and once you have read it and said yes, a deposit of 25 per cent secures the date. Nothing is taken before you have agreed the day.

Can I cancel?

Yes — free of charge up to 48 hours before the day. Cancel inside that window and the deposit comes back in full.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The day bends. Stops get longer, get shorter, get dropped, or get swapped for somewhere the cloud is not sitting. Dan tells you on the morning what the day actually wants to be. Highland weather is not a reason to cancel — some of the best days here are the ones that looked unpromising at eight in the morning.

Will we have to stop and charge the car?

No. The car has around 300 miles of planned range, charges overnight at the croft, and is topped up in Inverness before collection if a long day needs it. The longest day we run is about 230 miles. You will not spend part of a day you have paid for sitting at a charger.

Why the car is electric

Is lunch included?

Not usually, and it varies by day — some days we book a table, some days there is nowhere to book because there is no café for thirty miles and you are better off bringing something. Each day page says exactly what is and is not in the price.

What each day includes

Can you do a day that is not on the list?

Yes, and it is most of what we do. The tours on this site are the ones asked for most often rather than a menu. Tell us what you actually want to see — a place you read about, somewhere you came as a child, a photograph you want at a particular hour — and we will build the day around it and tell you honestly whether it fits.

The tours as a starting point

How long do we get at each stop?

As long as you want, within the day. Nothing is priced by the stop. If the light is right we stay until it is not, and if somewhere is doing nothing for you we leave early and give the time to somewhere better.

What should I bring?

Boots or something you do not mind getting wet, and layers — the glens run their own weather and it is reliably colder at the top than at the car. A camera if you take photographs. Beyond that, nothing: it is a day out, not an expedition.

Who is driving?

Dan James, who has spent fifteen years visiting and exploring the Highlands and now has his own family croft at Dundreggan. There is one car and one guide, so the person who answers your enquiry is the person who turns up at your door.
